Speech and language therapy

Supporting children with feeding, swallowing and communication.

Our speech and language therapists at Evelina London Children’s Hospital assess and manage children with a range of conditions affecting:

  • eating, drinking and swallowing
  • language and language understanding
  • speech and voice
  • augmentative and alternative communication such as signing and using picture symbols
  • social interaction

The following services at our hospital incorporate speech and language therapy:

Acute speech and language therapy

Our acute service works with infants, children and young adults who are staying in hospital to support them with communication and feeding difficulties. We also work closely with community teams to make sure children have support in place for when they leave hospital. Sometimes we'll continue to work with children after they leave hospital, working with the community speech and language therapy team.

Our therapists help children across many specialities:

  • ear, nose and throat (ENT)
  • gastroenterology
  • general paediatrics
  • general surgery
  • heart (cardiology)
  • intensive care (PICU)
  • neonatology (NICU)
  • neurology
  • orthopaedics
  • renal
  • respiratory
  • rheumatology

Research and education

Our team take part in local and national audit and research projects.
