A fabulous refurbishment for the Evelina London fluoroscopy room Last updated: Tuesday, 24 February 2026 After 3 months of improvements, Evelina London Children’s Hospital has a newly refurbished fluoroscopy room. In the first month since reopening, over 100 patients have already benefited from the updated space. What is a fluoroscopy? A fluoroscopy uses X-rays to create moving images in real time. This helps radiologists to see what is happening inside the body and understand how different parts are working. A fluoroscopy test allows the radiologist to watch these images as they happen, which can be very helpful for making a diagnosis. Lucy Clough, superintendent radiographer explains: “Fluoroscopy is used to look at a range of conditions, including swallowing problems, tummy and bowel concerns, and some urinary conditions. We use fluoroscopy for babies, children, and young people up to 16 years of age.” What’s new? The newly refurbished room has been designed with children and families in mind. Much loved artwork was carefully preserved, and new ceiling distractions were added, creating a brighter, more welcoming environment. The new room features a bright and friendly Arctic theme, including a narwhal skylight and artwork of a polar bear and explorer, to help create a calm and welcoming environment. A new surgical light has also been installed to support safe and effective care. The new fluoroscopy machine provides clearer images while reducing radiation exposure, helping doctors make accurate diagnoses as quickly as possible. Lucy Clough says: “Our imaging team is very excited about the new room and believes it will offer a better experience for children, young people, and their families, as well as support ongoing improvements in patient care and research.” Print this page Contact us If you're a journalist and have a media enquiry, please contact us.
