Evelina London remains a Centre of Excellence for the treatment of muscle-wasting conditions Last updated: Monday, 03 February 2025 Representatives from Muscular Dystrophy UK have visited Evelina London Children's Hospital to present the neuromuscular team with a Centre of Clinical Excellence award for a second time. Evelina London first received recognition from the charity in 2019 and was re-accredited in 2023. Evelina London's neuromuscular service is one of 24 centres to be given the award. The awards review process involves a rigorous assessment of services by experts, with a panel of health professionals and patient representatives developing the criteria for the awards. Patients' views were also gathered as part of the review process. Muscular Dystrophy UK is the leading charity for more than 110,000 children and adults in the UK living with one of over 60 muscle wasting and weakening conditions. Muscle-wasting conditions, including muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and myopathies, cause muscles and nerves to weaken and waste over time. Dr Vasantha Gowda, consultant paediatric neurologist and the neuromuscular service lead at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, said: "The award of 'Centre of clinical excellence with research' by Muscular Dystrophy UK is a wonderful endorsement of the Evelina neuromuscular team, our wards and staff and all the other specialties such as respiratory medicine, cardiology, genetics and our community teams who strive to provide the highest quality care and treatment to our patients every day. This also demonstrates to our patients that we have a clear desire to maintain clinical excellence and continue to develop our services further so we remain at the forefront of paediatric neuromuscular care provision in the UK." Dr Kate Adcock, Director of Research and Innovation at Muscular Dystrophy UK, said: "We would like to congratulate Evelina London Children's Hospital that has been recognised with a Centre of Excellence award after a robust and rigorous assessment of their service by leading neuromuscular experts and members of the muscle wasting and weakening community. Despite continuing pressures and challenges within the NHS, these centres strive every day to ensure they promote best practice and provide an exemplary service." Professor Deirdre Kelly CBE who is both a trustee of Muscular Dystrophy UK and also Chair of Evelina London Women and Children’s Clinical Group, said: "I was delighted to be present when the Evelina Team received their award, especially as Trustee at Muscular Dystrophy UK and Chair of the Committee which supervises the award, I know how much hard work is involved in establishing such an excellent service. As Chair of the Evelina London Women’s and Children’s Clinical Group, I am proud of the teams dedication and exceptional care, which is so important for our patients and families."
