Six-year-old Tony Hudgell is taking on a new fundraising challenge for us in tribute to his hero Captain Sir Tom Moore.

Inspired by Captain Sir Tom, Tony set out to raise £500 by walking 10 kilometres throughout June 2020 on his prosthetic legs. With an outpouring of support from across the world, he raised more than £1.5 million to thank our staff for caring for him since he was a baby. Taking points from Tony and his family’s experience at Evelina London, the money Tony raised last year will go towards a series of projects that will help the hospital provide specialist care and support for the 103,000 children and young people who come through our doors each year.

Captain Sir Tom's family have recently announced they are celebrating his life with the Captain Tom 100, which invites people to undertake a charity fundraising challenge based around the number 100, between Friday 30 April and Monday 3 May.

Tony is challenging himself to walk a total of 100 steps without the aid of his crutches.

Tony’s mum, Paula, said: “There isn’t a day that goes by that Tony doesn’t talk about Captain Tom. When we told Tony about the Captain Tom 100, there was no question about it, he knew he wanted to take part.”

In October last year, Tony received some specially designed prosthetic legs from our prosthetics service, who have supported Tony since he was two years old. The new legs make Tony 5cm taller and are designed to improve his mobility.

Paula said: “Tony has been working hard to get used to moving around on new legs.

Tony’s prosthetist Andreia Paulo said: “We’re really excited to see how Tony does in his Captain Tom 100 fundraiser and we are sure he’ll be able to reach 100 steps.

“We are all very proud of him and can’t wait for him to tell us all about it when we see him next.”
