Your appointment at the medical feeding clinic

This page explains what you and your child can expect at our medical feeding clinic.

Please allow at least 1 hour for the appointment.

Changing or cancelling your appointment

If you need to change or cancel your child’s appointment for any reason, please phone 020 7188 4000.

Please tell us as soon as possible so we can offer the appointment to another patient. 2 or more late cancellations or failure to attend the appointment may result in your child being discharged from the clinic.

Before your appointment

Please bring to the appointment:

  • your child's red book (personal child health record) if your child is under 5 years old
  • a list of any medicines and dietary supplements your child is taking
  • details of any professionals involved in your child's care
  • a short video of your child eating or drinking if you have one

During your appointment

We'll ask you questions about your child's eating and drinking as well as their general health. The doctor may examine your child, for example by listening to their chest or feeling their tummy.

We may watch your child eat and drink if you have brought a snack or drink. We cannot watch a full meal or provide a full swallow assessment during the appointment.

We'll discuss your questions and concerns about your child’s feeding difficulties with you.

After your appointment

After the appointment, we'll write a letter to you and the relevant local professionals with our opinions and advice. The letter will have a contact number you can call if you have any questions.

After the appointment and sending our advice to the local professionals, we'll either discharge your child or offer you another appointment. We may meet with your child's local team online
