More about our feeding clinics

Medical feeding clinic

This clinic is run by a speech and language therapist, a dietitian and a children's neurologist, if needed.

Videofluoroscopy clinic

This clinic is held in the children’s imaging department, by a speech and language therapist and a radiographer.

Videofluoroscopy involves taking x-ray pictures of what is happening inside your child’s mouth and throat during feeding. We will ask you to help your child eat.

Initial appointments last between 45 minutes

The x-rays are taken without anyone touching your child and toys and DVDs are available to distract them during the x-rays. After the x-rays, a speech and language therapist will show you and your child the pictures and explain the results.

Complex feeding clinic

This clinic is is run by a team which may include a speech and language therapist, a psychologist, an occupational therapist, a dietitian, a nurse and a consultant doctor, depending on the needs of the patients.

Initial appointments last around 90 minutes. Follow up appointments last approximately 45 minutes.

At the appointment, the team will ask questions about your child’s past and current feeding. They will watch your child eat and drink. This will help to build up a picture of your child’s skills and difficulties. You will have a chance to discuss any concerns. Toys will be available for your child to play with during the appointment.

As we are a teaching hospital, students and visitors may be observing the team. We will always ask your permission for them to observe your appointment.
