Your appointment with the inherited metabolic diseases service

This page explains what you and your child can expect when you visit the inherited metabolic diseases centre.

How do I get an appointment?

Patients are referred by their GP or local consultant.

Changing or cancelling your appointment

If you need to change or cancel your appointment for any reason, contact our appointments administrator on 020 7188 4000 or email paediatricappointment@gstt.nhs.uk.

Before your appointment

Lipid clinic

Patients older than one year should come fasted (water only from midnight) until the blood sample is taken.

Metabolic clinic

Please bring your child’s medicines with you to the appointment.

During your appointment

You or your child will be seen by a doctor. However, other team members may also be present such as the clinical nurse specialist and/or a metabolic dietitian.

On occasion, we may have students or visitors who may be present at your appointment in order to observe the team. If this makes you feel uncomfortable, please inform a member of the team immediately.

The length of your appointment will be based on your individual needs.

After your appointment

You will be put on the waiting list for a follow-up appointment.

You should receive a letter for your child’s appointment six weeks prior to your appointment date.

How to get to Evelina London.

Our inherited metabolic service clinics are held on level 0 – Ocean.

Our inpatients stay on Savannah Ward (dragonfly zone).

Day cases (a day-long admission in a ward where special investigations take place) are held on Savannah Ward and the Childrens's Day Unit.
