Who we are
We are a team of doctors, nurses and other health professionals who support children and young people with additional needs related to their development or social circumstances.
We work closely with hospitals, schools and social care services to make sure each child and their family feel supported and get the right help when they need it.
What we do
Supporting children with developmental and complex health needs
We work with children and young people who need extra support with their development, health or mental wellbeing. This includes:
- checking and supporting children with differences in brain development, such as autism or learning disabilities.
- keeping an eye on the health of children with physical disabilities or genetic conditions like Down syndrome.
- following up on the development of babies who were born early or had serious health problems at birth.
- helping children with developmental problems who have trouble with sleeping, going to the toilet, or eating a very limited range of foods.
- doing health check-ups for children in specialist schools and supporting their move into adult health services when they’re older.
- investigating possible hearing problems in children with significant hearing loss.
Keeping children safe (safeguarding)
We carry out health checks when there are concerns about a child’s safety or wellbeing. We work closely with social workers, schools and other services to help protect children.
Children who are looked after
We do health check-ups for children and young people living in care. These check-ups help make sure these children are healthy and well, and support them to have a say in decisions about their future, including where they will live long term.
